Sanaa McCoy Lathan was born in New York City and studied at Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. Her parents worked in the movie and television industry, her mother, native American actress on Broadway, her father, African American worked as a produces and behind the scenes for the PBS television. Her brother fallows also the steps of their parents, he is also an actor. Sanaa McCoy Lathan is an American actress and voice actor, born on 19 September 1971. She played in numerous movies, such us the box-office hits Love & Basketball, Alien vs. Predator, Something New, and The Family That Preys, she was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the movie A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway. In the present, she is the voice of Donna Tubbs in The Cleveland Show.
Sanaa Lathan graduated the University of California and then enrolled at Yale School of Drama, there she studied with Earle R. Gister and performed in a many of Shakespeare’s plays. She became famous both on Broadway and Los Angeles stages. She took her father’s advice and focused on making a professional base on the Los Angeles stage. As a young actress she played roles in movies like In the House, Family Matters, NYPD Blue and Moesha. In the same period, she won a price Best Actress nod from the Los Angeles NAACP Theatrical Award Committee for the performance in To Take Arms.
Lathan earned a degree of recognition for her role in the Blade movie, with Wesley Snipes, were she performed the role of the mother of Snipes. Her next performances were in the movies Life with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy, in The Best Man with Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau Jr., and Morris Chestnut, in The Wood with starring Diggs and Omar Epps The movie The Best Man become one of the top ten highest grossing African American films in history, and Sanaa received for her role in this movie NAACP Image Award nomination for her performance.
Then, she played with the actor from the movie The Wood, Omar Epps in the movie Love&Basketball and for this role she earned her the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress and a BET Award. The role in the multicultural comedy Catfish in Black Bean Sauce brought her even more acclaim for her work. Also in 2001 she was named by the Ebony magazine one of the 55 Most Beautiful People, was honored by Essence magazine and Black Entertainment Television. In 2002 with her performance in Brown Sugar, a romantic comedy she won a NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
In 2006, she co-starred with Simon Baker in Something New a romantic comedy about the interracial relationship. In 2009, Sanna co-starred with Matthew Broderick in Wonderful World a touching drama. The year 2009, was also the year when she began voicing a character on The Cleveland Show. Sanaa Lathan decided in 2007 to have a baby. She got pregnant with her boyfriend Chicago Bears Defensive End Odewale Ogunleye. At 35 years, after she built herself a career in the movie industry and got lots of prices for her movie work she decided to found a family.
